Technical Design Engineer

Job description

The Technical Design Engineer in the production workshop for the event industry translates creative concepts into detailed, build-ready technical drawings (CAD) for events, exhibitions, and activations. Acts as the bridge between the design team and workshop production team, ensuring safe custom fabrication, compliance with health & safety regulations, and efficient execution. Responsibilities: produce detailed production drawings, 3D concepts, and construction plans using AutoCAD/SolidWorks; perform/review structural analysis and load calculations for custom event structures, rigging points, and suspended elements; design and develop prototypes for scenic elements, jigs, and fixtures; ensure designs are structurally sound and meet event regulations and health & safety standards; collaborate with project manager and workshop technicians to optimize workflows, solve construction challenges, ensure quality control, and manage costs; research, select, and manage construction materials and create Bills of Materials; maintain accurate engineering records, technical files, and as‑built drawings.

Requirements

• 5+ years of experience in custom fabrication, scenic construction, exhibition design, or event production
• advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or Inventor) and 2D AutoCAD and Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator/Photoshop)
• strong understanding of manufacturing processes (sheet metal, CNC machining, carpentry) and material properties
• ability to solve complex technical problems in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment
• hands‑on attitude with willingness to be on the shop floor, support the production team, and test prototypes
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field or equivalent.
